Tacoma (/t?'ko?m?/, US dict: t?·ko′·m?) is a mid-sized urban port city in and the county seat of Pierce County, Washington, United States.[5] The city is on Washington's Puget Sound, 32 miles (51 km) southwest of Seattle, 31 miles (50 km) northeast of the state capital, Olympia, and 58 miles (93 km) northwest of Mount Rainier National Park. The population was 198,397, according to the 2010 census.[6] Tacoma is the second-largest city in the Puget Sound area and the third largest in the state. Tacoma also serves as the center of business activity for the South Sound region, which has a population of around 1 million people.

Tacoma adopted its name after the nearby Mount Rainier, originally called Mount Tahoma. It is known as the "City of Destiny" because the area was chosen to be the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad in the late 19th century. The decision of the railroad was influenced by Tacoma's neighboring deep-water harbor, Commencement Bay. By connecting the bay with the railroad Tacoma's motto became "When rails meet sails." Today, Commencement Bay serves the Port of Tacoma, a center of international trade on the Pacific Coast and Washington state's largest port.

Like most central cities, Tacoma suffered a prolonged decline in the mid-20th century as a result of suburbanization and divestment. Since the 1990s, developments in the downtown core include the University of Washington Tacoma; Tacoma Link, the first modern electric light rail service in the state; the state's highest density of art and history museums; and a restored urban waterfront, the Thea Foss Waterway.

Tacoma-Pierce County has been named one of the most livable areas in the country.[7] Tacoma was also recently listed as the 19th most walkable city in the country.[8] In contrast, the city is also ranked as the most stressed-out city in the country in a 2004 survey.[9] In 2006, women's magazine Self named Tacoma the "Most Sexually Healthy City" in the United States.[10] Tacoma is famous for the 1940 collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Prior to that event, Tacoma was most noted for the Tacoma riot of 1885.

Tacoma was inhabited for thousands of years by American Indians, predominantly the Puyallup people, who lived in settlements on the delta.

In 1852 a Swede named Nicolas Delin constructed a sawmill powered by water on a creek near the head of Commencement Bay, but the small settlement that grew up around it was abandoned during the Indian War of 1855-1856. In 1864, pioneer and postmaster Job Carr, a Civil War veteran and land speculator who hoped to profit from the selection of Commencement Bay as the terminus of the Transcontinental Railroad, built a cabin (a replica of Job Carr's cabin, which also served as Tacoma's first post office, was erected in "Old Town" in 2000 near the original site), and later sold most of his claim to developer Morton M. McCarver (1807–1875), who named his project Tacoma City, derived from the indigenous name for the mountain.

Tacoma was incorporated on November 12, 1875, following the merger of Old Tacoma and New Tacoma on January 7, 1884. Its hopes to be the "City of Destiny" were stimulated by selection in 1873 as the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad, thanks to lobbying by McCarver, future mayor John Wilson Sprague, and others. The transcontinental link was effected in 1887, but the railroad built its depot on "New Tacoma", two miles (3 km) south of the Carr-McCarver development. The two communities grew together and joined. The population grew from 1,098 in 1880 to 36,006 in 1890. Rudyard Kipling visited Tacoma in 1889 and said it was "literally staggering under a boom of the boomiest".[11]

George Francis Train was a resident for a few years in the late 19th century. In 1890, he staged a global circumnavigation starting and ending in Tacoma to promote the city. A plaque in downtown Tacoma marks the start/finish line.

In November 1885 white citizens led by then-mayor Jacob Weisbach expelled several hundred Chinese residents peacefully living in the city. As described by the account prepared by the Chinese Reconciliation Project, on the morning of November 3, 1885, "several hundred men, led by the mayor and other city officials, evicted the Chinese from their homes, corralled them at 7th Street and Pacific Avenue, marched them to the railway station at Lakeview and forced them aboard the morning train to Portland, Oregon. The next day two Chinese settlements were burned to the ground."

The discovery of gold in the Klondike in 1898 led Tacoma's prominence in the region to be eclipsed by the booming development of Seattle.

20th century

A major tragedy marred the end of the 19th century, when a streetcar accident resulted in significant loss of life on July 4, 1900.

Tacoma was briefly (1915-1922) a major destination for big-time automobile racing, with one of the nation's top-rated racing venues located just outside the city limits, at the site of today's Clover Park Technical College.

During a 30-day power shortage in the winter of 1929/1930, Tacoma was provided with electricity from the engines of the aircraft carrier USS Lexington.[12][13]

In 1935 Tacoma received national attention when George Weyerhaeuser, nine-year-old son of prominent lumber industry executive J.P. Weyerhaeuser, was kidnapped[14] while walking home from school. FBI agents from Portland handled the case, in which payment of a ransom of $200,000 secured release of the victim. Four persons were apprehended and convicted. The last to be released was paroled from McNeil Island in 1963. George Weyerhaeuser went on to become chairman of the Board of the Weyerhaeuser Company.

In 1951, an investigation by a state legislative committee revealed widespread corruption in Tacoma's government, which had been organized commission-style since 1910. Voters approved a mayor/city-manager system in 1952.

Tacoma featured prominently in the garage rock sound of the mid-1960s with bands including The Wailers and The Sonics. The surf rock band The Ventures were also from Tacoma.

Downtown Tacoma experienced a long decline through the mid-20th century. Harold Moss, later the city's mayor, characterized late 1970s Tacoma as looking "bombed out" like "downtown Beirut" (a reference to the Lebanese Civil War that occurred at that time.) "Streets were abandoned, storefronts were abandoned... City Hall was the headstone and Union Station the footstone" on the grave of downtown.[15]

This picture began to change somewhere around 1990. Among the projects associated with the downtown renaissance were the federal courthouse in the former Union Station (1991); the Washington State History Museum (1996), echoing the architecture of Union Station; the adaptation of a group of century-old brick warehouses into the University of Washington Tacoma campus; the numerous privately financed renovation projects near that UW-Tacoma campus; the Museum of Glass (2002); the Tacoma Art Museum (2003); and the region's first light-rail line (2003).[16]

The first local referendums in the U.S. on computerized voting occurred in Tacoma in 1982 and 1987. On both occasions, voters rejected 3-1 the computer voting systems that local officials sought to purchase. The campaigns, organized by Eleanora Ballasiotes, a conservative Republican, focused on the vulnerabilities of computers to fraud.[17]

In 1998, Tacoma installed a high-speed fiber optic network throughout the community. The municipally owned power company, Tacoma Power, wired the city.

21st century

Tacoma's Hilltop neighborhood started struggling with crime in the 1980s and early 1990s and at one time could be considered worse than Compton, California (earning the nickname "Tacompton").[18] The problems have declined in recent years as neighborhoods have enacted community policing and other policies.[19] Bill Baarsma (Mayor from 2002–2010) is a member of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition,[20] a bi-partisan group with a stated goal of "making the public safer by getting illegal guns off the streets." The coalition was co-chaired by Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

In 2004, Tacoma was ranked among the top 30 Most Livable Communities, in an annual survey conducted by the Partners for Livable Communities.[21] In 2009 Tacoma elected its second African-American mayor, Marilyn Strickland.

In 2007, the locally produced short film, "South 5" took a humorous look at the somewhat contentious dynamic that exists between Tacoma and Seattle, Washington.

Downtown revival

Beginning in the early 1990s, Tacoma has taken steps to revitalize itself and its image, especially downtown.

The University of Washington established a branch campus in Tacoma in 1990. The same year, Union Station (Tacoma) was restored. The Museum of Glass opened in downtown Tacoma in 2002, showing glass art from the region and around the world. It includes a glassblowing studio and is connected to the rest of the Museum District by the Bridge of Glass, which features works by Tacoma native glass artist Dale Chihuly.

Tacoma's downtown Cultural District is the site of the Washington State History Museum (1996) and the Tacoma Art Museum (2003). America's Car Museum was completed in late 2011 and resides near the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma. The glass and steel Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center opened in November 2004.[22]

Downtown Tacoma has a thriving Theatre District, anchored by the 89-year-old Pantages Theater. The Broadway Center for the Performing Arts[23] manages the Pantages, the Rialto Theater, and the Theatre on the Square, as well as Tacoma Little Theatre, approaching its 100th birthday, and Gold From Straw Theatre Company, practicing out of a retired and partially renovated "Mecca" adult entertainment theater. Other attractions include the Grand Cinema and the Temple Theatre.

Tacoma is the home of several international companies including staffing company True Blue Inc. (formerly Labor Ready), lumber company Simpson and the food companies Roman Meal and Brown and Haley.

Frank C. Mars founded Mars, Incorporated in 1911 in Tacoma.

Beginning in the 1930s, Tacoma became known for the "Tacoma aroma", a distinctive, acrid odor produced by paper manufacturing on the industrial tide flats. In the late 1990s, Simpson Tacoma Kraft reduced total sulfur emissions by 90%. This largely eliminated the problem; where once the aroma was ever-present, it is now only noticeable occasionally, primarily when the wind is coming from the east.

U.S. Oil and Refining operates an oil refinery on the tide flats in the Port of Tacoma. Built in Tacoma in 1952, it currently refines 39,000 barrels of petroleum per day.

The Tacoma Mall is the largest shopping center in Tacoma. It is owned by Simon Property Group. Anchor tenants include JC Penney, Sears, Macy's, and Nordstrom.

An economic setback for the city occurred in September 2009 when Russell Investments, which has been located in downtown Tacoma since its inception in 1936, announced it was moving its headquarters to Seattle along with several hundred white collar jobs.[33]

Hospitals in Tacoma are operated by MultiCare Health System and Franciscan Health System. Hospitals include MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital, MultiCare Mary Bridge Children's Hospital & Health Center, MultiCare Allenmore Hospital and St. Joseph Medical Center.

How a Great Plumber Saved the Birthday Party

As the mother of two toddlers, I can tell you that life already has plenty of surprises in store on a daily basis . While they provide me with more joy that they could possibly imagine, they also offer a lot more challenges that I could have dreamed of as well . But all in all, weve been able to navigate the issues without too much drama.

However, I do recall an incident that happened when I was setting up for a big party celebrating my eldest childs birthday, the smart and sassy one who shows a lot of love, while always getting into trouble. I had spent the entire week cooking and preparing everything for his birthday party to which wed invited a lot of family members and of course, all his little friends.

Bright and early Saturday morning I started decorating the dining room in preparation for the big day . With the party scheduled to start at two o clock, I thought I had plenty of time to get everything ready when suddenly I heard a strange sound coming from the bathroom . I went down the hallway and found water on the floor and my little boy running out of the bathroom and down the hallway .

Apparently something had clogged the toilet and it just would not flush, and kept overflowing every time I tried. While mopping up the floor was no problem, I found that I could not unclog the toilet to save my life. At that point, a lot of thoughts when running through my head, but I knew that I only had a few hours at most to clean up the floor and get this toilet unclogged .

I called the plumber and hoped that he would be available quickly I had called upon his services before, but I didnt know if he could be there in time to save the party, especially on a Saturday . However, he not only answered his phone as he always does, but he told me that he was on his way. I probably should not have been surprised since the plumber had a stellar reputation for service and also was available for emergency calls .

The plumber was ringing my doorbell 20 minutes later. He had a big smile on his face and boy was I relieved . He went straight to work on my toilet while I continued to set up for the birthday party. . He went right to the bathroom and told me to just carry on with setting up for the party . My boys seemed happy to see him too, even if they didnt quite understand what was going on. They sensed that I was in a much better mood.

Fixing the Toilet

The plumber got right to work on the toilet and then explained to me afterwards what had happened . Apparently, my little troublemaker decided to find out how much toilet paper he could cram down the toilet before he tried flushing it. He practically used up the entire roll before he tried flushing and it was all wadded up down in the drain so the toilet backed up.

He explained that when something like this happens, the first thing I should do is shut off the water valve to prevent any more overflowing from occurring . The water valve is right next to the toilet and is pretty easy to see and operate . Knowing boys, and especially mine, there is no guarantee this wont happen again, no matter what I tell them. The next step is to use the plunger to try to force the blockage through the drain so that it can be carried out into the sewage system . He said that the water in the toilet bowl should be enough to force the blockage to dislodge. Once the toilet water has passed down the pipe then I could turn the water back on and try flushing it again . If the water in the bowl is passing through easily, then turn the water back on and try a proper flush to see if the blockage has been removed .

However, my son was much more thorough in his work so the plumber had to use a snake to free up the blockage . He was able to shove the snake down into the wad of toilet paper and push it through the pipe into the sewer system. Once he finished, he just turned the water back on and the toilet flushed normally.

Since it only took him a couple of minutes to free up the blockage, the plumber inspected the rest of the toilet and found that floating arm was not adjusted properly . I did recall that I could hear water running in the bathroom once in a while, but never really looked into it because everything seemed fine. But I was either too distracted or simply didnt know enough to understand that something was actually wrong with the toilet itself .

He showed me where the handle and the floating ball needed to be adjusted a little in order to keep the water from flowing into the tank when it wasnt necessary . I had noticed that our water bill had gone up in the past month. So I was very thankful to him that he spotted this problem . He even showed me how to adjust it myself should this ever happens again.

The Plumber Saved the Birthday Party

I cannot say enough about my plumber as he unclogged the toilet, fixed another problem and inspected it all within 15 minutes . He was friendly and nice and the charges were very reasonable. I hesitate to think what might have happened if the plumber was not able to arrive in time. As it was, I had no difficulty preparing for the birthday party and none of my guests could even have guessed what had just happened a couple of hours before .

Before that morning I hadnt given much thought to how important it is to know a good reliable plumber you can call in an emergency, Im just so thankful I have one that really cares about his clients as well as the quality of his work. I am thankful and relieved that my plumber is one that really cares about his work and will make the time for me and his other clients on days when Im sure hed like to be doing something else .

Plumbing How To Fix Videos

Linda was pacing the carpeted floor of the living room. She held her youngest son Joe to her chest. .Last night he had thrown up twice, and Linda hadnt been able to sleep. Her other son Daniel was four, sitting on the floor in front of the television, half watching a colorful and loud show for preschoolers, half of his attention put on banging two plastic Spider-Man toys together. Every few minutes Linda would duck down to gaze out the living room window, out towards the driveway .Lindas husband had gone in to work early, leaving before the Sun was fully up.Linda had been left to take care of the two kids. She had taken them downstairs, set them both in the living room and turned on the TV, then went to the kitchen to get breakfast together. At first she didnt notice that the floor was soaking wet. Until she slipped, catching herself on the kitchen cupboard before falling down . The tiled kitchen floor was completely soaked with freezing cold water . She scrambled to find the cause, which was a cracked pipe under the sink, spouting water all over the place .The pipe was slick with water and shining in the soft light squeezing in through the open cabinet. And poured some milk into their sippy cups, setting everything on the coffee table in front of the TV .She went to the fridge and made two glasses of chocolate milk in sippy cups and then gave her children their breakfast before hurrying to the phone and calling her husband at work.He was swamped, and annoyed when he took her call. When she told him about the burst pipe he wondered why she was bothering him, he wasnt a plumber so he just told her to do what he said, Why are you wasting time calling me? . Hang up and call a plumber! he ordered .Then he hung up, and Linda was left to take care of the pipe. She went into the living room and sat on the couch, watching as her two kids ate their breakfast and drank their milk. They were fighting over their game, with the younger one accusing his brother of cheating. Finally they let it go and focused on the cartoon being shown on TV . .She had dialed one, and they had promised to send someone out quickly. So this was the situation, Linda trying to soothe little Max, pacing the living room from one end to the other . Finally, nearly an hour later, she saw a large van pull up to the house .He drove a large white van, pulled it into the driveway, climbed out and headed for the front door .Linda pulled the door open before the guy had a chance to knock. Hi, Im Linda, thank you for coming, she said as she greeted him on the front porch. Hi, Im Joe, glad you called. .He was in his late thirties, tall and thin, wearing a large tool belt. Linda welcomed him inside, setting Max on the floor next to Stevie, and took Joe to the kitchen .She turned and set her youngest next to his brother, and then led Tim to the kitchen .I mopped it up, but it keeps leaking, she explained as she stopped in the doorway while Tim kept on, stepping through the new puddle. No problem, he said as he bent and opened the cabinet door.He peered underneath the sink and nodded his head . I need to cut the water off before I can start, but this shouldnt be a big problem to repair . Linda was relieved that it didnt seem like any big deal to the plumber .She didnt know how hard it would be to fix the pipe, but it seemed like it wouldnt be a big deal.Tim turned off the water valve to the pipe, then stood at the sink and turned the faucet on so any water left in it would drain. He then took his flashlight and looked under the sink again . He cleared all the cleaning products out from under the sink so he could clearly see the problem, drying the pipe with a rag he pulled out of his toolbox . By now the boys were standing over him eyeing all of his tools .Lindas two sons stood in the doorway, watching the man work . Joe then grabbed a small tub and putty knife out of the toolbox and went to work . The tub contained epoxy and with the putty knife Joe applied some to the pipe .He used the putty knife to apply some of the epoxy to the pipe. He pulled two clamps out of his toolbox and placed them carefully over the rubber to hold everything tightly together . Once the epoxy was dry, Joe used waterproof plumbing tape and wrapped it around the pipe, over the rubber, for additional protection .He stood from under the sink, went to turn on the water valve, and then tried the faucet in the sink. The water ran from the spigot and down into the drain.Tim bent at his knees and made sure the pipe wasnt going to leak again. It didnt. He smiled and turned to see Linda with her sons in the doorway. Youre good to go, he said .It wasnt a bad leak, so I didnt need to cut out the pipe, I just patched it up. Oh youre a life saver, Linda said, going to get her purse. When she arrived back in the kitchen she was pleasantly surprised to see that Joe had used her mop and bucket to clean up the mess . Thank you so much, this really isnt your job! she exclaimed . Joe just shrugged his shoulders saying, Im happy to help, you have your hands full as it is with the boys .After he was done Linda wrote him a check, and then gave him a cash tip from her purse.Tim told her it was unnecessary, but when she insisted he took it and thanked her. By now he had his toolbox packed up and was ready to go. Saying good-bye to the boys with high fives all around, he headed out to his van, but not before leaving his card behind at Lindas request. She was so grateful the problem was solved so quickly and so inexpensively. And now she knew exactly who to call next time she needs a plumber. Before doing anything else she added Joe to her list of contacts in her smartphone, under Plumber .
